Samsung could finally start making 108 MP sensors early next year. South Korean tech giant has now shared an image of what looks like a camera sensor, and that is called 'Resolution Redefined'.

Larger pixels result in images that are less noisy. Because of that reason, companies like Apple and Google, and Samsung in its flagship phones, use sensors with larger pixel sizes.

Samsung, partnership with Chinese handset maker Xiaomi, is working on a 108MP mobile image sensor, called Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX.

Samsung first announced its ISOCELL technology in 2013.

The company said in a statement that it will expand its image sensor offerings from its recently announced ultra-high 64MP to 108MP that equivalent to a high-end DSLR camera.

Yongin Park, Executive Vice President of Sensor Business at Samsung Electronics said,

"Through close collaboration with Xiaomi, ISOCELL Bright HMX is the first mobile image sensor to pack over 100 million pixels and deliver unparalleled colour reproduction."

The new sensor would be able to absorb more light in low-lit settings and its pixel-merging Tetra Cell technology would allow the sensor to imitate big-pixel sensors. The mechanism would use a high ISO in darker settings to produce clearer pictures.

The new HMX supports video recording without losses in field-of-view at resolutions up to 6K and 30-frames-per-second.

While neither Samsung nor Xiaomi has named the first smartphone with this sensor, but, it remains to be seen how competitors react to this development.
