Facebook now designed a facial recognition app for its employees identification

Now the social giant Facebook is testing a face recognition app that confined many controversies related to privacy. The company built an internal app that allowed its employees to identify their co-workers and friends by scanning them through their phone cameras.


Facebook workers now be able to identify their colleagues who work with them by pointing the smartphone camera towards their face. The app will literally recognize them and tell their names and other details.


According to the social networking platform, the app that has not been released to the public, because it has been under developing process. The company also cleared about its purpose that is used only to identify people. An AI tool of the app will help to recognize faces.


Business Insider was first reported that the app was being developed between 2015 and 2016 and its development was later stopped.


Spokespersons of the company said,
"As a way to understand the new technology, our teams regularly build apps for internal use. The app related to face recognition is designed and available only to Facebook employees. With this help, they can identify fellow employees and friends when face recognition is enabled."


The Social media platform already received criticism for using facial recognition in the past.

A paper reads explaining the company's approach, said,
"Face recognition can lead to loss of privacy and face replacement technology may be misused to create misleading videos.
Recent world events concerning advances in, and abuse of face recognition technology invoke the need to understand methods that deal with de-identification. Our contribution is the only one suitable for video, including live video, and presents a quality that far surpasses the literature methods."

Facebook has more than two billion users, most of them might be don't realize that the company can store their biometric data. And even though it has so far only used facial recognition for photo tagging, the idea of its tech being deployed more widely.
